Get Design Clients Continuously Without Spending All Your Time & Money on Nonsense (Like Social Media)
Okay, today we are covering the biggest problems interior designers, architects and decorators face when building their businesses… it’s really hard to get a constant flow of projects and clients!
The interior design industry is huge, and according to the latest report published by Ibis World, the interior design and home improvement industry is a $15bn+ industry, in the USA alone. That is a massive market! I also noticed that there are a few industry sectors that have a larger amount of trade fairs and events than home improvement, design and furnishing sectors. With this in mind, it should be easy for design entrepreneurs to create themselves an amazing, profitable business and a high level of income.
So why is then that so many interior designers, architects, decorators, and other home improvement professionals struggle to get clients? I’ve been interviewing hundreds of designers from South Africa to Sweden, the USA to Australia, only to notice that most of them struggle to get leads and to turn the leads into customers.
WORKING IN DESIGN IS EXCITING
So many designers get into the self-employment and dream about building successful firms and a massive, recurring client base. But, too many designers meet this reality…
… the phone is not ringing
… the customers are not coming through the door
… the potential clients shop online and DIY their homes
… the ‘other designers’ have much more followers and fans; so they must be really successful…
THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS DESIGN ENTREPRENEURS FACE
They don’t know their own value proposition
They don’t know their customers’ real pains
They don’t know the real benefits of their services or products
They try to sell the same size fits all – service
They don’t have a system to get new leads
They listen to too many tactics and try too many things
They don’t know how to convert the leads to customers
They don’t have knowledge in technology to utilize online marketing
They feel that they need to work for free in order to win the client project
They think that having a great vision and talent in design is enough
They believe that having a social media presence is enough
They pay too much for ads that give no return
They don’t actually want to market and sell their services, just do the design… 🙂 I get it!
After having worked with designers; both service professionals and product business owners, and been running my own design firm for some years, I decided to dedicate myself to creating a method that any designer can use; it’s a foolproof system that you can plug in and play, and the result it will change the way you do marketing and fill your client roster forever.
For some while ago I wrote this article about focusing on the wrong message to wrong people at the wrong time.
Because most people you reach with your marketing are in the 90% o the population who don’t know that they have a problem or a need, they don’t know that you exist and they are not actively looking for a solution. The very few of the total people you reach with your marketing message are ready to buy. But the ones that are ready to buy, you want to be the best one to serve them with a solution that solves their specific problem and paint points.
So as a marketer, your first job is to make these people aware of their problem, make it relevant and to understand the benefits of solving this problem. By doing that, you inspire and warm up your audience. Then, once they acknowledge the problem, or start looking forward to the benefits, they might start looking for answers. Now your job is to keep yourself on top of their minds!
Most Design Entrepreneurs get this wrong… they go directly for the ‘kill’; they’re offering their solutions to the big masses, i.e. the 90% of the people. This results in people ignoring the ads and (and a whole lotta wasted ad monies!).
Another big problem is that, given we have all the popular tools like Instagram, blogs, Facebook and Pinterest; the whole Internet is filled with tips and tricks like “blog more” “tag this” “post at least 546 times a day”… Problem? Well, you might have noticed that all this time you spend on social media doesn’t really give you many new clients.
What’s there to do then?
I’m a big fan of social media and being published in magazines, TV, and other media outlets. However, I don’t like to waste my money or time, so just being on all these platforms and posting the endless amount of images and videos, it gets frustrating. What I want to have, and want YOU to have, is a system that automatically takes your followers on a journey together with you; a journey that you have crafted, and that has a GOAL: becoming your clients!
Let’s have a look at the pyramid again. What every design business owner should be focusing on is to tell the right message to the right people at the right time, through the right channel…
Let’s flip this:
What you have here now is a MARKETING FUNNEL that enables you to create the right message, at the right time to the right people. Your job is to pull people through your marketing funnel, through various LOVE STAGES, to the end goal: becoming your customer.
So how to do this?
Let me introduce the Design Client Attraction Method!
Design Client Attraction Method is a step-by-step system for growing your design business. Regardless of where you are today, having a system in place for finding, attracting and closing clients you choose, instead of hoping your phone would ring. No more time wasted on pointless social media postings, calling around for referrals, or paying thousand for PR companies. Because, there is an easier way to do this!
The DCA Method Enables You Show The World Your Value and Become THE Design Professional Attracting THE Right Clients. It Helps You to Systematically Move Them from Strangers to Clients. All While You Get to Do What You Love: Designing.
Sound good? Let’s have a look at the various stages of the method…
The system consists of 9 equally important steps; it’s a systematical approach to going from very little bookings to very many bookings. Each stage is a necessity, but because of the simplicity of the layout, everyone can apply this method to their businesses! No matter where you live, no matter who you serve (in fact, really knowing who you serve is one of the steps)
Each step in this process has key activities that you should focus on, depending on the level of your business and effectiveness of lead generation activities. The arrows show in what order to progress!
